This classic commentary volume of the Book of Matthew is part of a series by Christian Publishing House (CPH) that covers all of the sixty-six books of the Bible. The purpose of this Classic Commentaries series is to introduce the Christians of today to the Bible teachers of yesterday. These men, such as John C. Ryle, Matthew Henry, John Owen, Charles Hodge, J. B. Lightfoot, among others have been a trusted source for more than a century. The interpretation of the classics in many ways is to be more trusted than the new hermeneutics of higher criticism today. In addition, these authors are very direct and to the point about our walk with God, which can help us better appreciate how we need to follow a Christlike life course, to find his favor.
Many of these authors use high-sounding words and phrases, archaic terms, and Scriptures, as well as the King James Version. We have taken the liberty of replacing these with easy to understand terms and a modern translation of the Bible. Unless otherwise indicated, Scripture quotations in the commentary paragraphs are from the Updated American Standard Version © 2016 (UASV). In addition, at times we may add a parenthetical, helping the reader understand a technical term. In addition, we will add footnotes at times, offering addition insights. Finally, we will let Scripture speak for itself. We pray that the reader of these volumes acquire an understanding of what the Bible authors meant by the words that they used, to see their significance, appreciate and apply them better in their lives.
