At Christian Publishing House, we believe the Bible is the fully inspired, inerrant Word of God. That conviction drove us to spend sixteen years producing the Updated American Standard Version — a truly literal translation that delivers exactly what God said, not what translators think He meant.
In the late 1800s, conservative Christianity was the overwhelming majority. Churches used literal translations, taught using the historical-grammatical method, and sought the original words of the original authors. Public morality reflected those standards. Open sexual sin was rare and shameful.
That changed dramatically. Higher criticism and the historical-critical method replaced the historical-grammatical approach. After World War II, American seminary students returned from European universities carrying liberal theology. Textual scholars shifted from recovering the original words to simply finding the earliest text. Translations moved from literal accuracy to interpretive readability. Interpretation became subjective instead of objective. These three changes — translation, textual criticism, and interpretation — removed the Bible’s authority from the church.
The consequences were devastating. Genesis 6:5 and 8:21 tell us that the thoughts of man’s heart are only evil continually. Jeremiah 17:9 says the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick. Because of this fallen condition, humanity naturally bends toward evil. The conscience God gave us acts as a restraint, as Romans 2:14-15 shows — even an atheist can live a morally upright life if he does not silence that inner voice.
But when the church waters down Scripture, that restraint is removed. Each compromise hardens the conscience. What once bothered a person no longer does. Small compromises lead to greater ones, until people sit and casually watch the very depravity that would have horrified previous generations. The conscience grows calloused. Sin becomes normal. This is exactly how we arrived at churches with homosexual and transgender pastors, women dressing immodestly for worship, and a culture drowning in public sexual immorality. Unthinkable violence has become the norm.
We refuse to participate in this destruction. We stand uncompromisingly for literal translation, the historical-grammatical method, and recovering the actual words of the original text. Only by returning to the true Word of God can the conscience of a nation be awakened again.
