BOOK DESCRIPTION
Charles H. Spurgeon was one of the most influential Christian preachers, writers, and evangelists of the nineteenth century. A devoted pastor, expositor, and author, he repeatedly called believers to take their relationship with Christ seriously, submit themselves to the Word of God, resist unbelief and spiritual discouragement, and strengthen their faith through confidence in Jehovah, Jesus Christ, and the truth of Scripture.
Known as the “Prince of Preachers,” Spurgeon pastored the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London and became renowned for his powerful, Scripture-centered preaching. His sermons, lectures, books, and devotional writings reached millions and continue to challenge Christians to examine their beliefs and conduct in the light of Scripture.
THIS IS NOT A REPRINT OF CHARLES H. SPURGEON’S ORIGINAL BOOK.
More than a century has passed since Spurgeon preached and wrote about faith, doubt, discouragement, and Christian assurance. While his encouragement to struggling believers, his warnings against unbelief, and his insistence upon trusting God rather than changing emotions remain valuable and relevant, believers today face intellectual, emotional, cultural, and personal pressures that require clear and direct answers from the Scriptures.
This edition is a 21st-century presentation of Spurgeon’s call to overcome doubt and develop confident Christian faith. I have preserved his earnest desire to strengthen believers struggling with uncertainty while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. This is not an update or an annotated edition of Spurgeon’s original work. The chapters examine why believers struggle with doubt; spiritual discouragement and weakness; intellectual questions Christians are sometimes afraid to ask; remaining faithful when God seems silent; biblical assurance in relation to salvation, faithfulness, and endurance; overcoming guilt through Christ’s sacrifice; why changing emotions cannot determine biblical truth; breaking the cycle of constantly questioning one’s faith; grounding Christian faith in historical fact rather than feelings; trusting the unchanging character of God and the reliability of His promises; exercising faith in the midst of weakness; strengthening confidence through the evidence for Jesus Christ; building stronger faith through the Spirit-inspired Word; and standing firmly through doubt and uncertainty.
Where necessary, Spurgeon’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Conquering doubt does not require mystical impressions, private revelations, emotional certainty, or pretending that difficult questions do not exist. The Christian confronts doubt through prayer, submission to Jehovah, faith in Jesus Christ, careful examination of evidence, accurate understanding of Christ’s sacrifice, and knowledge and application of the written Word produced under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
My prayer is that this 21st-century presentation will encourage Christians to confront doubt without fear, examine difficult questions honestly by the Spirit-inspired Word, distinguish changing emotions from objective biblical truth, overcome unnecessary guilt through Christ’s sacrifice, ground their faith in historical reality, deepen their confidence in Jehovah’s character and promises, strengthen their trust in Jesus Christ, and continue faithfully along the path leading to eternal life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was one of the most influential Christian preachers of the nineteenth century. Known as the “Prince of Preachers,” he pastored the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, where thousands gathered weekly to hear his powerful, Scripture-centered sermons. A gifted expositor, prolific author, and passionate soul-winner, Spurgeon devoted his life to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and training others for faithful Christian service. His sermons, lectures, and books have shaped generations of pastors, teachers, evangelists, and lay believers.
