Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) was an English Baptist minister, preacher, teacher, and writer whose sermons reached enormous audiences during his lifetime and have continued to instruct generations of Christians throughout the world. A careful student of Scripture and a powerful communicator, Spurgeon possessed a remarkable ability to proclaim and defend the truths of the Christian faith with clarity, conviction, biblical reasoning, and direct application.
 
In Defending Your Faith: An Introduction to Apologetics, material drawn from Spurgeon’s extensive body of sermons has been brought together and organized around the Christian responsibility to understand, proclaim, and defend biblical truth. Although Spurgeon did not write a book under this title, his preaching contains a substantial body of material directly relevant to Christian apologetics. Throughout his ministry, he confronted unbelief, skepticism, attacks upon Scripture, false teaching, religious error, and attempts to separate Christian faith from biblical truth. This twenty-first-century presentation brings those apologetic elements together in a unified treatment designed for modern readers.

More than a century has passed since Spurgeon preached the sermons from which the material in this volume has been drawn. While the biblical truths he defended have not changed, much of his language, literary style, cultural setting, illustrations, sentence structure, and method of presentation belong to the nineteenth century and are not always immediately accessible to twenty-first-century readers.
 
This volume is therefore a modern compilation and thorough reworking of material drawn from Spurgeon’s published sermons. I have preserved the central biblical arguments, reasoning, observations, and apologetic force of his preaching while reorganizing the material into a systematic introduction to defending the Christian faith. The language, organization, titles, headings, explanations, transitions, and presentation have been extensively revised so that modern readers can follow the discussion naturally while still benefiting from the substance of Spurgeon’s biblical preaching.
 
The purpose is not to make Spurgeon appear to have written a modern apologetics textbook, nor to place words or arguments into his mouth that he never expressed. Rather, the aim is to gather related material from across his preaching and present it according to major questions Christians encounter when explaining and defending their faith. Subjects concerning Scripture, God, Jesus Christ, the gospel, faith and reason, skepticism, unbelief, false religion, Christian confidence, and truth.
 
Wherever possible, Spurgeon’s strong emphasis upon the authority of Scripture has been retained, while the biblical foundation of the discussion has been strengthened and clarified. The historical-grammatical method governs the interpretation throughout. Biblical passages are considered according to their historical setting, vocabulary, grammar, context, and intended meaning. Scripture is allowed to interpret Scripture, and Christian doctrine is established from the biblical text rather than from philosophical speculation, religious tradition, or changing cultural opinion.
 
Scripture remains the final authority for determining what Christians believe and what they are called upon to defend. Christian apologetics is not the defense of human traditions, denominational customs, or philosophical systems. It is the reasoned defense of the truth revealed in the inspired Word of God. The Christian must therefore know what Scripture teaches, understand why it is trustworthy, recognize challenges to biblical truth, and be prepared to give sound reasons for the hope and convictions grounded in God’s Word.
