BOOK DESCRIPTION
Mark Hopkins was a respected Christian educator, philosopher, and defender of the faith in the 19th century. A careful student of Scripture and a disciplined thinker, he presented the evidences of Christianity with clarity and sought to show that Christian belief rests on sound reason, historical fact, and divine revelation.
His work Evidences of Christianity has helped readers examine the rational, historical, and moral foundations of the Christian faith. This updated edition brings his arguments into the twenty-first century, preserving his commitment to biblical truth and careful reasoning while adapting the presentation for today’s readers.
THIS IS NOT A REPRINT of Mark Hopkins’s original work.
More than a century has passed since Hopkins first presented his defense of Christianity. While the central arguments remain relevant and persuasive, many of the illustrations, cultural references, expressions, and scientific discussions belong to the world in which he lived.
This edition is a twenty-first-century update of Hopkins’s teaching. I have retained his central arguments, logical approach, and confidence in Christianity while revising the language and presentation for a modern audience. The heart of the book—demonstrating that Christianity is supported by reason, history, observation, and reliable testimony—remains unchanged.
Wherever possible, I have preserved Hopkins’s orderly and thoughtful method. However, the chapter titles and much of the content have been rewritten to address the questions, objections, and forms of skepticism encountered by Christians today.
My prayer is that this updated edition will help a new generation examine the evidences of Christianity, overcome doubt, and confidently defend the truth of the Christian faith.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mark Hopkins was a nineteenth-century American educator and theologian who served as president of Williams College for over three decades. Born in 1802, he became known for his clear thinking and his lectures on the evidence for Christianity, which were later published as a book. Hopkins believed faith and reason worked together, and he sought to give believers a solid foundation for their convictions.
