More than a century has passed since Spurgeon wrote about the nature of faith. While his concern for genuine belief remains valuable and relevant, the circumstances confronting unbelievers today have changed considerably. Modern unbelief faces intellectual, emotional, cultural, and personal obstacles that require direct examination from the Scriptures.
 
This edition is a 21st-century update of Spurgeon's concern for the state of the soul. I have preserved his earnest desire to see seekers come to genuine faith while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. The chapters examine the quiet no of unbelief, the evidence that never arrives, the God who feels absent, the cost of believing, the pride that won't kneel, the wound that won't heal, the crowd that shapes you, the hypocrisy you can't ignore, the fear of being wrong, the freedom you don't want to lose, the intellectual wall, the delay that drains hope, the conversion you keep postponing, and the invitation still open.
 
Wherever possible, I have retained Spurgeon's serious concern for the spiritual health of Christ's followers. However, the chapter titles and much of the content have been rewritten to address the doubts, fears, wounds, and objections that keep people from believing in the twenty-first century.
 
My prayer is that this updated edition will encourage seekers, skeptics, and struggling believers to examine themselves honestly by the Spirit-inspired Word, move from hesitation to active trust in Christ, and enter the life of faith that Jesus and His apostles called every person to receive.
