This edition is a twenty-first-century update of Ryle’s teaching. I have preserved his central message, practical seriousness, and commitment to the authority of Scripture while completely rewriting the language, structure, chapter titles, and presentation. The heart of the book—the necessity of understanding sin, pursuing holiness, growing spiritually, exercising genuine faith, and continuing faithfully on the path of salvation—is just as urgent now as it was in Ryle’s day.
 
Wherever possible, I have maintained Ryle’s direct, searching, and pastoral spirit. The chapters have been rewritten to address the realities Christians face today, including skepticism, moral compromise, half-hearted discipleship, spiritual emptiness, weakened churches, and the pressure to conform to a godless world. Throughout the book, Scripture remains the final authority for understanding sanctification, Christian conduct, and the faithful imitation of Jesus Christ.
 
My prayer is that this twenty-first-century update will awaken serious self-examination, strengthen genuine faith, and help a new generation pursue the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
