More than a century has passed since Murray wrote extensively about faith and the Christian life. While his call for believers to trust God fully remains valuable and relevant, Christians today face doubts, distractions, misleading spiritual ideas, emotional pressures, and competing claims about truth that require clear answers firmly grounded in Scripture.
This edition is a 21st-century update of Murray’s teaching on developing a stronger faith. I have preserved his earnest desire to move Christians beyond weak, uncertain, and inconsistent belief while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. The chapters examine why faith becomes spiritually stagnant; how objective biblical truth provides a lasting foundation; whether faith can simply be produced by human determination; why honesty, humility, and surrender are essential to spiritual growth; how Christians can rest confidently in their acceptance by God through Christ; how pride and self-reliance weaken faith; how to confront doubt on solid biblical ground; how surrender replaces the exhausting desire for control; and how disciplined habits strengthen faith over time. The book also examines justification and the relationship between faith and works, remaining firm during severe difficulties, putting belief into daily action, developing spiritual endurance rather than depending upon emotional highs, and evaluating modern spiritual claims by the standard of God’s written Word.
Where necessary, Murray’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Strong faith is not produced by mystical impressions, private revelations, emotional experiences, or positive thinking. It develops as Christians understand, believe, obey, and repeatedly rely upon the Spirit-inspired Word of God.
My prayer is that this updated edition will help Christians identify what weakens their faith, build their confidence upon objective biblical truth, reject pride and self-reliance, develop disciplined obedience, remain steadfast during difficulties, and continue faithfully along the path leading to eternal life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African pastor, missionary, teacher, and prolific Christian author whose writings have influenced generations of believers. Born in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa, he studied in Scotland and the Netherlands before entering the ministry. During more than five decades of Christian service, Murray became widely known for his emphasis on prayer, humility, obedience, spiritual growth, and a close relationship with Christ.
He authored more than 200 books and devotional works, including Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, The State of the Church, and Humility. His clear, earnest writing continues to challenge Christians to take their faith seriously and apply biblical truth to everyday life.
