More than a century has passed since Torrey wrote and taught the material associated with How to Study the Bible for the Greatest Profit. While the fundamental biblical principles behind serious Bible study remain necessary and valuable, many of his expressions, illustrations, cultural references, organizational choices, and methods of presentation belong to another era and are not always immediately accessible to twenty-first-century readers.
 
This edition is a complete twenty-first-century revamp of Torrey’s work. I have preserved its central concern—helping Christians study the Bible in a way that produces the greatest spiritual benefit—while completely rewriting and substantially expanding the language, structure, chapter titles, explanations, and application. The discussion develops a practical approach to Bible study that includes understanding the structure of Scripture, interpreting the text through the historical-grammatical method, recognizing literary forms, respecting immediate and broader context, studying the importance and meaning of biblical words, comparing related passages, and avoiding common interpretive errors.
 
Particular attention is also given to the necessity of allowing Scripture to speak for itself. Bible study must never become an exercise in forcing personal opinions, theological traditions, philosophical assumptions, or modern theories upon the text. The historical-critical method and its underlying assumptions are rejected because they place human judgment over the inspired record and can turn the Word of God into the word of man. Proper Bible study begins with confidence in Scripture and seeks to determine what Jehovah caused the biblical authors to communicate through the words they wrote.
 
The book also emphasizes that profitable Bible study is not merely academic. Scripture should strengthen faith, deepen understanding, develop wisdom, promote obedience, guide Christian conduct, prepare believers to recognize false interpretations, and equip them to communicate biblical truth accurately to others. Studying the Bible for the greatest profit, therefore, means allowing what is learned to influence what we believe, how we reason, the decisions we make, and the way we live.
 
Throughout this book, Scripture remains the final authority. The goal is not to discover some hidden meaning behind the biblical text or to reconstruct a message different from the one the inspired authors actually gave. Careful study requires attention to words, grammar, historical setting, literary form, context, and the harmony of the Scriptures so that the reader can arrive at the meaning intended by the biblical writer.
