BOOK DESCRIPTION
Charles M. Sheldon was one of the most influential Christian voices of his generation. A passionate pastor, powerful storyteller, and bold voice for practical Christian living, he challenged believers to live out their faith in practical, radical ways. Through his writing and ministry, he called Christians to follow the example of Jesus seriously in every area of life.
Known as the author of the international bestseller In His Steps, Sheldon’s work has influenced millions of believers across the world. This updated edition brings his classic In His Steps into the 21st century—preserving his powerful challenge and core message while adapting the story and language for today’s readers.
This is not a reprint of Charles M. Sheldon’s original 1897 book.
More than a century has passed since Sheldon first wrote In His Steps. While the central question he posed—“What would Jesus do?”—remains as powerful and relevant as ever, the cultural setting and some of the language now feel dated to modern readers.
This edition is a 21st-century update of Sheldon’s classic. I have kept his core message, deep challenge to authentic discipleship, and passionate call to Christlike living intact while adapting the story, characters, and language for today’s world. The heart of the book—asking what Jesus would do in every decision we face—is just as needed now as it was in Sheldon’s day.
Wherever possible, I have maintained Sheldon’s earnest and compelling style. However, chapter titles and much of the content have been rewritten to reflect how a believer living in the twenty-first century would apply this life-changing question.
My prayer is that this updated edition will stir up a new generation of Christians to ask, “What would Jesus do?” in their own day and in their own way.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Charles M. Sheldon was an American pastor, author, and Christian reformer best known for his enduring classic In His Steps, first published in 1897. Born in 1857, Sheldon served for many years as pastor of Central Congregational Church in Topeka, Kansas, where he urged believers to make their faith visible in everyday life. His preaching and writing challenged Christians to consider how Jesus would act in the home, the church, the workplace, and society. Through the simple yet searching question, “What would Jesus do?” Sheldon gave generations of readers a practical call to Christlike discipleship. His work continues to inspire Christians to live with conviction, compassion, integrity, and obedience to the example of Jesus Christ.
