This twenty-first-century update brings their foundational scholarship to a new generation, preserving their commitment to documentary evidence and careful reasoning while incorporating major advances, such as the discovery of the New Testament papyri.

More than a century has passed since Westcott and Hort first published their introduction. While their core principles remain foundational, many of their illustrations, manuscript discussions, and historical references belong to the scholarly world of their day.
 
This edition is a twenty-first-century update of their teaching. I have retained their central arguments, methodological approach, and confidence in the earliest documentary witnesses while revising the language and presentation for today’s readers. The heart of the book—recovering the original words of the original Greek texts of the New Testament through careful study of the documents—remains unchanged.
 
Wherever possible, I have preserved Westcott and Hort’s orderly and scholarly method. However, the chapter titles and much of the content have been rewritten to address the questions, discoveries, and methods of textual studies in the twenty-first century.
 
My prayer is that this updated edition will help a new generation of students and scholars understand the principles of New Testament textual studies and appreciate the reliability of the text that has come down to us

Brooke Foss Westcott was an English bishop, biblical scholar, and theologian, serving as Bishop of Durham from 1890 until his death. He is perhaps best known for co-editing The New Testament in the Original Greek in 1881.
 
Fenton John Anthony Hort, known as F. J. A. Hort, was an Irish-born theologian and editor, with Brooke Foss Westcott, of a critical edition of The New Testament in the Original Greek.
