I have preserved that earnest purpose while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers today. The fourteen chapters examine Jesus’ priorities, unnecessary commitments, undistracted prayer, careful Scripture study, digital distractions, completing tasks, workplace boundaries, rest and sleep, family attention, patient listening, thoughtful decisions, simpler material priorities, unexpected needs, and perseverance when progress takes time.
Where necessary, Murray’s theological language and interpretations have been revised according to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Christian direction comes through the Spirit-inspired Word, and the practical counsel throughout this book emphasizes understanding that instruction and applying it within actual responsibilities.
My prayer is that this updated edition will encourage Christians to examine their priorities honestly, regain attention consumed by distractions, and follow Jesus’ example of purposeful obedience. May it help readers give appropriate time to prayer, Scripture, family, work, and compassionate service while continuing faithfully along the path leading to eternal life.

Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African pastor, missionary, teacher, and prolific Christian author whose writings have influenced generations of believers. Born in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa, he studied in Scotland and the Netherlands before entering the ministry. During more than five decades of Christian service, Murray became widely known for his emphasis on prayer, humility, obedience, spiritual growth, and a close relationship with Christ.
