BOOK DESCRIPTION

Charles H. Spurgeon was one of the most influential Christian preachers, writers, and evangelists of the nineteenth century. A devoted pastor, expositor, and author, he repeatedly called believers to take their relationship with Christ seriously, submit themselves to the Word of God, resist sin and spiritual complacency, and pursue a life of faithful obedience.

Known as the “Prince of Preachers,” Spurgeon pastored the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London and became renowned for his powerful, Scripture-centered preaching. His sermons, lectures, books, and devotional writings reached millions and continue to challenge Christians to examine their beliefs and conduct in the light of Scripture.

THIS IS NOT A REPRINT OF CHARLES H. SPURGEON’S ORIGINAL BOOK.

More than a century has passed since Spurgeon preached and wrote on the Christian’s spiritual conflict. While his warnings concerning Satan, sin, temptation, discouragement, and the necessity of steadfast faith remain valuable and relevant, believers today face intellectual, emotional, cultural, and personal pressures that require clear and direct answers from the Scriptures.

This edition is a 21st-century presentation of Spurgeon’s call to steadfast Christian warfare. I have preserved his earnest desire to see believers resist spiritual defeat while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. This is not an update or an annotated edition of Spurgeon’s original work. The chapters examine Satan, self, sin, and the Savior; recognizing spiritual roadblocks; Satan’s efforts to hinder Christian faithfulness; temptation arising from Satan, human imperfection, and the fallen world; developing the mind of Christ; overcoming deeply rooted habits; handling exhaustion and discouragement; using active faith as a shield against doubt and fear; fighting back with the Spirit-inspired Word; overcoming the pressures of the fallen world; enduring hardships without attributing them to God; exercising human freedom responsibly while remaining on the path of salvation; and refusing to be drawn away from Jehovah’s path by opposition or the need for self-defense.

Where necessary, Spurgeon’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Spiritual warfare does not require mystical impressions, private revelations, or an unhealthy fascination with demons. The Christian resists Satan through submission to Jehovah, faith in Jesus Christ, prayer, righteous conduct, and accurate knowledge and application of the written Word produced under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

My prayer is that this 21st-century presentation will encourage Christians to recognize the reality of spiritual warfare without fear or superstition, examine themselves honestly by the Spirit-inspired Word, resist Satan and the pressures of the fallen world, reject sinful self-reliance, deepen their trust in Christ, and continue faithfully along the path leading to eternal life.
