BOOK DESCRIPTION

Charles H. Spurgeon was one of the most influential Christian preachers, writers, and evangelists of the nineteenth century. A devoted pastor, expositor, and author, he repeatedly called believers to take their relationship with Christ seriously, submit themselves to the Word of God, resist theological compromise and spiritual complacency, and remain faithful to biblical truth regardless of cultural pressure or personal cost.

Known as the “Prince of Preachers,” Spurgeon pastored the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London and became renowned for his powerful, Scripture-centered preaching. His sermons, lectures, books, and devotional writings reached millions and continue to challenge Christians to examine their beliefs and conduct in the light of Scripture.

THIS IS NOT A REPRINT OF CHARLES H. SPURGEON’S ORIGINAL BOOK.

More than a century has passed since Spurgeon preached and wrote against compromise within Christianity and the growing rejection of biblical authority. While his warnings concerning theological decline, accommodation to unbelief, fear of opposition, and the necessity of unwavering loyalty to Scripture remain valuable and relevant, believers today face intellectual, theological, cultural, and social pressures that require clear and direct answers from the Scriptures.

This edition is a 21st-century presentation of Spurgeon’s call to stand firmly for biblical truth in an increasingly skeptical culture. I have preserved his earnest desire to see believers remain faithful to Christ while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. This is not an update or an annotated edition of Spurgeon’s original work. The chapters examine resisting compromise in a post-truth culture; maintaining Christian conviction when others compromise; defending absolute moral truth amid changing standards; accepting the cost of following Christ; guarding Christian teaching against theological downgrades; distinguishing the biblical gospel from culturally adapted religion; defending the exclusive saving role of Jesus Christ against religious pluralism; preserving first-century Christianity rather than changing Scripture to accommodate contemporary culture; overcoming fear of public scorn; trusting Jehovah’s authority when the world is in turmoil; drawing upon biblical resources when rejected by the culture; enduring the scrutiny and mockery of skeptics; learning from Christians who have faithfully defended biblical truth; and looking beyond present opposition to Christ’s return and Kingdom.

Where necessary, Spurgeon’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Standing firm does not require hostility, political activism, cultural isolation, or an argumentative spirit. The Christian remains faithful through submission to Jehovah, faith in Jesus Christ, prayer, righteous conduct, courageous proclamation of biblical truth, and accurate knowledge and application of the written Word produced under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

My prayer is that this 21st-century presentation will encourage Christians to recognize theological and cultural compromise without becoming fearful or combative, examine every teaching carefully by the Spirit-inspired Word, resist pressure to reshape Christianity according to changing human standards, defend the exclusive truth of Christ with courage, remain faithful when confronted by rejection or ridicule, deepen their trust in Jehovah, and continue standing firmly for biblical truth while looking confidently toward Christ’s return and Kingdom.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was one of the most influential Christian preachers of the nineteenth century. Known as the “Prince of Preachers,” he pastored the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, where thousands gathered weekly to hear his powerful, Scripture-centered sermons. A gifted expositor, prolific author, and passionate soul-winner, Spurgeon devoted his life to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and training others for faithful Christian service. His sermons, lectures, and books have shaped generations of pastors, teachers, evangelists, and lay believers.
