R. A. Torrey was a faithful Christian pastor, evangelist, Bible teacher, educator, and writer whose ministry reached across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A devoted student of Scripture and a forceful communicator, he urged Christians to know the Bible personally, study it carefully, believe what it teaches, obey its commands, and use its truths in helping others come to know Jesus Christ.
His teaching on Bible study has helped generations understand that serious study of Scripture requires far more than simply reading words on a page. The Bible student must approach God’s Word with diligence, careful attention, prayer, faith, obedience, and a determination to discover what the Bible authors meant by the words that they wrote. More than a century has passed since Torrey delivered and published much of the material that formed The Importance and Value of Proper Bible Study. While the central biblical principles he emphasized remain necessary and valuable, many of his illustrations, expressions, cultural references, controversies, and methods of presentation belong to another era.
This edition is a complete twenty-first-century revamp of Torrey’s work. I have preserved its central concern—the importance, value, and proper practice of Bible study—while completely rewriting and substantially expanding the language, structure, chapter titles, explanations, and application. The original emphasis has been developed into a broader examination of how Christians should study the Bible, determine what the Bible authors meant by the words that they wrote, study biblical books according to their literary forms, and recognize the harmony of Scripture.
The book also moves beyond the mechanics of study to examine what proper Bible study should produce in the life of a Christian. Scripture should strengthen faith, cultivate wisdom, produce obedience, contribute to spiritual growth, equip Christians to stand firm in spiritual warfare, and prepare them to carry out effective evangelism. Bible study is not merely the accumulation of biblical information. What we learn must affect what we believe, how we think, how we live, and how we communicate biblical truth to others.
Throughout this book, Scripture remains the final authority. The goal of proper Bible study is not to impose our ideas upon the text but to understand accurately what Jehovah caused the Bible authors to communicate through the words they wrote. Careful study, therefore, requires attention to context, grammar, history, literary form, and the harmony of the inspired Scriptures.
My prayer is that this twenty-first-century revamp will renew an earnest desire for serious Bible study, strengthen confidence in the inspired Word of God, and help a new generation become careful students of Scripture who faithfully put what they learn into practice.

R. A. Torrey (1856–1928) was a powerful American evangelist, pastor, and Bible scholar. A close associate of D. L. Moody, Torrey served as a pastor, seminary president, and worldwide evangelist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of biblical Christianity in the early 20th century.
Torrey authored more than 40 books, including What the Bible Teaches, How to Pray, and Difficulties in the Bible. His clear, logical teaching and unwavering commitment to the authority of Scripture continue to strengthen believers today.
