James Stalker (1848–1927) was a Scottish Presbyterian minister, theologian, teacher, and writer whose works introduced generations of readers to the life, ministry, suffering, death, and triumph of Jesus Christ. A careful student of Scripture and a gifted communicator, Stalker possessed a remarkable ability to present the events of the Gospels in a clear, orderly, and memorable way. His writing brought together biblical history, cultural background, careful observation of the Gospel accounts, and practical Christian instruction in a manner accessible to both serious students and ordinary readers.
 
In The Trial and Death of Jesus Christ, Stalker turned his attention to the closing events of Jesus’ earthly ministry. These final hours bring the reader into the upper room with Jesus and His apostles, through the betrayal and arrest in Gethsemane, the hearings before the Jewish authorities, the denials of Peter, the proceedings before Pilate and Herod, the execution of Jesus, His burial, resurrection, appearances to His disciples, and exaltation to God’s right hand. This twenty-first-century presentation brings the central purpose of Stalker’s classic treatment to modern readers while preserving its strong historical emphasis and its determination to follow the Gospel record as a connected account.

More than a century has passed since Stalker wrote about the final days and hours of Jesus Christ. While the biblical events upon which his work was based have not changed, much of the language, literary style, historical discussion, cultural explanation, and method of presentation belong to the nineteenth century and are not always immediately accessible to twenty-first-century readers.
 
This edition is a thorough modern reworking of Stalker’s treatment of the trial and death of Jesus Christ. I have preserved his central purpose of following the events historically and chronologically while completely rewriting the language, organization, chapter titles, headings, explanations, and presentation. The goal is to allow modern readers to move naturally through the closing events of Jesus’ earthly ministry—from the Memorial Supper and His final instructions to the apostles, through His betrayal, arrest, hearings, condemnation, and execution, and onward to His burial, resurrection, appearances to His disciples, ascension, and exaltation at God’s right hand.
 
Wherever possible, I have retained Stalker’s ability to keep the reader focused on the movement of the Gospel narrative while strengthening and expanding the biblical foundation of the discussion. The historical-grammatical method governs the interpretation throughout. The Gospel writers are allowed to speak according to their own historical settings, vocabulary, grammar, and intended meaning. The individual Gospel accounts are considered together so that the reader can follow the sequence of events while still respecting the distinctive details preserved by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
 
Scripture remains the final authority for understanding what happened during these decisive hours, why Jesus willingly submitted to suffering and death, what His sacrifice accomplished, and why His resurrection and exaltation are inseparable from the Christian message. The events surrounding the trial and death of Jesus Christ are not merely the tragic conclusion of an extraordinary life. They stand at the heart of God’s purpose through His Son and reveal the obedience, courage, faithfulness, and sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.
 
My prayer is that this twenty-first-century presentation will help a new generation follow these events with greater clarity, understand their historical and biblical setting more fully, and gain a deeper appreciation for Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and the Savior of mankind.
