BOOK DESCRIPTION
Andrew Murray was one of the most influential Christian writers on faith, prayer, and spiritual growth. A devoted pastor, missionary, and author, he repeatedly called believers to take their relationship with Christ seriously, submit themselves to the Word of God, abandon fleshly self-reliance, and learn to trust Jehovah with patient faith.
Known for such Christian classics as Absolute Surrender, Abide in Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, and Humility, Murray authored more than 200 books and devotional works. His earnest concern for the spiritual condition of Christians and the church continues to challenge believers to examine whether their faith remains steady when answers are delayed, circumstances are uncertain, and God’s will requires patience.
THIS IS NOT A REPRINT OF ANDREW MURRAY’S ORIGINAL BOOK.
More than a century has passed since Murray wrote Waiting on God. While his central emphasis on patient faith, prayer, dependence, and trust remains valuable and relevant, believers today face pressures that often encourage impatience, anxiety, self-reliance, and the desire for immediate answers.
This edition is a 21st-century update of Murray’s call to wait faithfully upon God. I have preserved his earnest emphasis on trust, patience, surrender, prayer, and dependence while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. The chapters examine what it means to wait on God rather than rush ahead of Him, trust His character when answers are delayed, surrender personal plans to His will, remain spiritually steady during periods of uncertainty, develop patience, continue faithfully in prayer, maintain confidence in God’s promises, serve actively while waiting, grow spiritually through delay, encourage others, recognize God’s hand in difficult circumstances, and remain faithful until the waiting period reaches its proper outcome.
Where necessary, Murray’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Waiting on God does not mean seeking mystical impressions, private revelations, or inward messages from the Holy Spirit. Christian guidance comes through the Spirit-inspired written Word, which shapes faith, corrects thinking, strengthens endurance, and directs the believer’s conduct.
My prayer is that this updated edition of Waiting on God will encourage Christians to reject anxiety, impatience, and self-reliance, deepen their trust in Jehovah, remain faithful to Christ when answers are not immediate, and continue obediently along the path leading to eternal life.
