BOOK DESCRIPTION

Andrew Murray was one of the most influential Christian writers on faith, prayer, and spiritual growth. A devoted pastor, missionary, and author, he repeatedly called believers to take their relationship with Christ seriously, submit themselves to the Word of God, abandon fleshly self-reliance, and devote themselves wholeheartedly to faithful Christian service.

Known for such Christian classics as Absolute Surrender, Abide in Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, and Humility, Murray authored more than 200 books and devotional works. His earnest concern for the spiritual condition of Christians and the church continues to challenge believers to examine not only what they believe but how faithfully they are using their time, abilities, opportunities, and influence in the service of God.

THIS IS NOT A REPRINT OF ANDREW MURRAY’S ORIGINAL BOOK.

More than a century has passed since Murray wrote Working for God. While his central emphasis on Christian service, faithfulness, humility, love, and perseverance remains valuable and relevant, believers today face pressures that can produce either spiritual inactivity or exhausting religious busyness without clear biblical direction.

This edition is a 21st-century update of Murray’s call to faithful Christian service. I have preserved his earnest emphasis on obedience, humility, dependence, love, and wholehearted labor while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. The chapters examine the Christian call to serve, dependence upon God rather than human strength, following Christ’s example of service, working without seeking human recognition, cooperating with fellow Christians, avoiding spiritual burnout, aligning service with God’s will, finding joy in faithful work, cultivating humility and love, persevering when results are disappointing, remaining fruitful through dependence upon Christ, and continuing faithfully until the work entrusted to us is finished.

Where necessary, Murray’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. Christian service is not guided by mystical impressions, private revelations, or inward messages from the Holy Spirit. The Christian worker is directed by the Spirit-inspired written Word, which defines the work God requires, corrects motives, shapes character, and provides the standards by which Christian service must be carried out.

My prayer is that this updated edition of Working for God will encourage Christians to reject both spiritual inactivity and self-reliant busyness, deepen their devotion to Jehovah, serve others with humility and love, participate faithfully in the Great Commission, and continue working with endurance along the path leading to eternal life.
