The helpful purpose of Proverbs is stated in the opening verses: 'To know wisdom and discipline, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and uprightness; to give shrewdness to the inexperienced, to the young person knowledge and discretion.' (1:2-4) In harmony with that stated purpose, the book highlights knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, each of which is beneficial in its particular way. Knowledge is our greatest need. Wisdom gives us the ability to use knowledge aright. Understanding is vital for all of us, it gives us the ability to see our life in its connected parts; it means discernment , always with God in mind, for we cannot lean upon our own understanding.
WISDOM SPEAKS has chosen the 40 most beneficial proverbs, to give its readers an abundance of wise, inspired counsel to help them acquire understanding and safeguard their heart, “for out of it are the sources of life.” (4:23) WISDOM SPEAKS sets things straight by turning its reader to Almighty God. Each Proverb is dealt with individually, giving the reader easy to understand access to what the original language Hebrew words really mean. This gives the reader what the inspired author meant by the words that he used. After this, the reader is given practical advice on how those words can be applied in their lives today.
No phase of the human relationship is overlooked. From the person who isolates himself from his fellow worshipers of God because of loneliness, depression, or emotional pain (18:1), to the person in charge of others coming to conclusions before hearing both sides of a matter (18:17), to the person who struggles in making personal decisions (3:5-6), to the person who has had difficulty leaving their old ways behind (9:4-6), and many other life-circumstances. The worker in his store, the farmer in his field, the husband and wife and child, all receive wholesome instruction. Parents are helped so that they can be aware of the many snares lurking in the path of the youth. Wise ones can teach the inexperienced ones. WISDOM SPEAKS is practical wherever we live; the 40 Proverbs chosen and the commentary instruction and counsel never go out of date.
