BOOK DESCRIPTION
Andrew Murray was one of the most influential Christian writers on Christian discipleship and spiritual growth. A devoted pastor, missionary, and author, he repeatedly called believers to take their relationship with Christ seriously, submit themselves to the Word of God, grow in obedience, and examine whether their Christian lives reflected the faith they professed.
Known for such Christian classics as Absolute Surrender, Abide in Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, and Humility, Murray authored more than 200 books and devotional works. His earnest concern for the spiritual condition of Christians and the church continues to challenge believers to examine their faith and conduct in light of Scripture.
THIS IS NOT A REPRINT OF ANDREW MURRAY'S ORIGINAL BOOK.
More than a century has passed since Murray wrote about the spiritual condition of the church. While his concern for Christian faithfulness remains valuable and relevant, the religious circumstances confronting believers today have changed considerably. Modern Christianity faces theological, moral, interpretive, organizational, and evangelistic problems that require direct examination from the Scriptures.
This edition is a 21st-century update of Murray's concern for the state of the church. I have preserved his earnest desire to see Christians return to faithful discipleship while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for believers living today. The chapters examine the historical-critical method, ecumenical and interfaith cooperation, liberal and moderate Christianity, charismatic claims, neglect of the Great Commission, false Christian profession, and conformity to the world. The second half turns from diagnosis to restoration by examining the historical-grammatical method, first-century evangelism, accountable shepherding, Christian moral distinctiveness, biblical responsibilities within the congregation, doctrinal unity, and the Jerusalem Council model of collective oversight.
Wherever possible, I have retained Murray's serious concern for the spiritual health of Christ's followers. However, the chapter titles and much of the content have been rewritten to address the doctrinal confusion, cultural pressures, weakened biblical authority, declining evangelistic responsibility, and congregational problems facing Christianity in the twenty-first century.
My prayer is that this updated edition will encourage Christians, pastors, teachers, and congregations to examine themselves honestly by the Spirit-inspired Word, recover the Christianity taught by Jesus and His apostles, strengthen their commitment to the Great Commission, and restore the church to the biblical pattern established in the first century.
