Andrew Murray was one of the most influential Christian writers on faith, prayer, and spiritual growth. More than a century has passed since Murray wrote The Deeper Christian Life. While his appeal for greater Christian faithfulness remains valuable and relevant, believers today face intellectual, emotional, cultural, and personal pressures that require clear and direct answers from the Scriptures.
 
This edition is a 21st-century update of Murray’s call to Christian maturity. I have preserved his earnest desire to see believers grow beyond spiritual weakness while substantially rewriting and expanding the material for readers living today. The chapters examine daily fellowship with God through prayer, worship, and dependence; why many Christians experience less than God has promised; the movement from fleshly self-reliance to repentance and spiritual obedience; leaving spiritual defeat behind; being filled with the Holy Spirit-inspired Word through faith and complete surrender; depending upon Christ rather than feelings, circumstances, or human strength; the necessity of Christian workers living the truth they teach; and giving one’s abilities, possessions, and entire life to God.
 
Where necessary, Murray’s theological language and interpretations have been revised to conform more closely to the historical-grammatical meaning of Scripture. The Christian’s spiritual direction does not come through mystical impressions or private revelations but through the written Word produced under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
 
My prayer is that this updated edition will encourage Christians to examine themselves honestly by the Spirit-inspired Word, reject complacency and self-reliance, deepen their trust in Christ, and continue faithfully along the path leading to eternal life.
